VINTAGE TRAILER TOUR
April 27, 2013

Our tour group met up at the Waffle Barn in Yuba City and promptly at 9am we headed north for about 1 ½ hours to meet up with Tony’s Trailer Rally. This was my third year to go on this tour and Tony manages to put together a great selection of vintage trailers and tow vehicles. Tony put the word out and there were a lot of classic cars from the area and a large number of spectators. The huge mature trees provided the perfect amount of shade and sun to go along with BBQ lunch provided by park owners. It’s fun to poke around the inside of these trailers to see how they manage to utilize every square inch of space. Open what you think is a tiny closet and you’ll find a toilet that hinges up to provide for the shower space or if you’re really lazy……… you get the idea! Hope to see more of you on this tour next year. This year’s group consisted of Gary & Blanch, Randy & Ellen, Jim & LaRon, Bob & Jennifer. Bob Kennedy

CEMETERY TOUR

April 6, 2012

Eleven Club members met Tony at Save Mart for the tour to Sammy’s in Del Paso for breakfast.  They headed down Hwy 80 and met Gary/Blanch/Judy/Cecil at Sammy’s.  There were 14 club members and 2 guest of Joel/Rachel.

Sammy’s is located on Old Hwy 40 that is Del Paso Blvd.  The restaurant has a sign that says it has been there since 1944, but their restaurant used to be a gas station and restaurant.  Sammy’s burnt to the ground in 1968 and it took Sammy and his son over a year to rebuild it.  Sammy came from England and had owned a malt shop on K St., and a place on Auburn Blvd (also along Hwy 40) called Sammy’s Bungalow.  When they rebuilt Sammy’s it had bright orange booths and stools.  Then in the 1990s they changed it all to pink and green.

The service is always good there and the food too.

We had some time to kill before we headed to the cemetery, so Dale said that there was a So Cal shop down the block and they were going to have a pin stripping class and that we could go watch.  We all went down there and it was an interesting shop with all kinds of old stuff hanging from ceiling and sitting around.  The class was slow in starting so we all just walked around and then headed to the cemetery.

The Sacramento Historic City Cemetery has been there since the mid 19 century.  A volunteer was there in a dress from that era to lead us around and so were about 30+ other people.  LaRon joined us as we joined the group and as we walked around the cemetery the volunteer talked about who was murdered and who was buried there like Crocker, Mark Hopkins, Sutter and other famous people who helped settled Sacramento.  After she was done talking about all the bad things that had happen to people in there you get to thinking that the good old days were not so good.

It is a nice cemetery and they are doing a lot of work to improve it.  If you get a chance to go there for one of their tours do as they have them all year.

Then we headed to the New Roma Bakery which has been there since 1934 on E St., but first we drove around some old neighborhoods to see the old houses there.  We arrived at the bakery and were ready to try the pastries there. Good thing they had most of it behind glass counter as we were all drooling looking at all of it.

It was hard to decide on what to get, but we all picked out what we wanted and headed outside to eat it.  Everyone was pleased and some even went back in and bought bread and other goodies to take home.

Like always Tony/Mary did a good job on picking out a tour for us to go on.   Looking forward to the next one with the vintage trailers.

MARCH BREAKFAST TOUR

March 26, 2013

We had a nice turn out for our breakfast tour to Lincoln.  Seven members met at Save-Mart, plus Tom Eastman joined us too.

We headed out the back way down Mt. Vernon road to Sheridan and then on to Lincoln.  Like always the tour was enjoyable this time of year as it is Spring and everything is green and in bloom and lot’s of lambs/calves and even a fawn.

We would like to thank Allen and Mable for laying out the tour for us even though they could not come.

We arrived in Lincoln at exactly 9:30 and Kim,s had our tables set up for us and what a surprise Lyle and Sandy were there to greet us.  That made out group count up to 16.  They had our coffee to us in no time and then took our orders and although they were busy they got all our food out to us in no time.  The service was great and everyone said their breakfast was delicious.  The pancakes were the size of a platter and Gary and I had Chorizos and it was not greasy like it is most of the time at other restaurants.

I reminded everyone who was a veteran to let them know and they will give you a 20% discount on your bill, which our veterans (which there were a lot) took advantage of.   They will do it on the senior menu too, so if you go in there ask them for the discount.

Thanks to everyone that made it and we always seem to have a good time catching up and visiting with everyone we have not seen in a while.

Tony will be doing the next two months so check your newsletter as to where and when.  Next month looks like it will be a lot of fun and eating.

If anyone has a breakfast place to go to, let Gary know and in July/Aug we will not be here, so will need some ideas for those two months.

Remember when you plan a breakfast tour, make sure you drive  there and eat there before the tour just to check out things.  We did this last week end and a good things as the restaurant was not on the same page as we were as they changed prices and what we could eat from when I had talked to them last month.  So we had to make last minute changes, but it worked out ok.  If you are not sure about taking a back road ask Allen he is always there to help us and he knows a lot of neat back roads to go on.

As you can see, we had a great turn out

CAR MUSEUM TOUR

FEBRUARY 23, 2013

There were 17 club members who met at Denny’s for breakfast before we headed out on our tour to the Auto Museum.  About 4 members drove their classic cars.

We had a good breakfast at Denny’s with lots of laughter and visiting until the food came, then it got really quiet.  Tony/Mary/Rachel/Joel joined us for breakfast and then went their separate ways.  It was good to see Rachel and Joel as they work so we do not get to see them a lot.

We headed out with Gary in the lead and arrived at the Museum about 30 minutes  early.  The men stood outside and talked and us women sat in the cars and talked.  It was windy and cold outside.  We finally went in and Carolyn met us and said she would take the women around for a women’s tour and that Mike would be there soon to take the men around.  The five of us women headed out and Carolyn really enjoys her job as she has a lot of interesting information.  She is well informed about the cars and everything about them.  We had no idea that back when cars first came out that they bought their gasoline for the car at a pharmacy.  Also, that tires or rubber is white and that they added charcoal to make tires black as it was a lot of work to keep the white tires clean.

We left there around 12 and headed to Vintage Ford in Rancho Cordova for lunch and to just look around.  Some of the club members had never been there as it is a FORD store.  We all had hot dogs ,chips and a soda paid for by the club.  We walked around and looked at everything and ate free popcorn even though we were all full, but we had a good time.

Thanks Tony for setting it up and looking forward to the next one.
